Granite is Derived from the Latin word "Granum" meaning, "grain" because of its granular nature, Granite is a very hard, crystalline, igneous rock primarily composed of feldspar (alkali feldspar and plagioclase feldspar), quartz, orthoclase or microcline accompanied by one or more dark minerals. The Italian word for granite is granito, which is the past participle of granire (that is to granulate), from grano, meaning grain from original granum in Latin.

The minerals, which forms the granite also helps in lending colours like - white, pink, or light grey to it. Granite also contains small amounts of dark brown, dark-green, or black minerals, such as hornblende and biotite mica. The grains of the minerals in granite are large enough to be easily distinguished.

Granite is visibly homogeneous in texture and is the most common plutonic rock of the Earth's crust, formed by the cooling of magma (silicate melt) at depth.

Granite is the hardest building stone and occupies a prominent place among dimensional stones on account of its hardness, resistance to weathering, capability to take mirror polish, fascinating colours and textural patterns.

The principal characteristics of dimensional granite also include high load bearing capacity, crushing strength, abrasive strength, amenability to cutting and shaping without secondary flaws, ability to yield thin and large slabs and - above all - durability. Due to its dense grain it is impervious to stain.

Major Granite Deposit Location

This hard, coarse-grained rock makes up a large part of every continent. In India almost all of South India has good quality granite deposit.

Application
Polished granite slabs and tiles have achieved a special status as building stones throughout the world. Granite is commonly used today as one of the major fancy construction material. Available in wide spectrum of colors, granite stones are used in flooring, kitchen tops, etc.
